Gargoyle

Details

  • While I normally work with architecture more literally, in this piece I am using a single architectural element - the gargoyle - to speak metaphorically about the contradictions I experience being queer. Gargoyles are demonic, but ward off evil. They're highly decorative, but also serve the very important function of fighting erosion by diverting water from the walls of the building. These contradictions reflect the duality of pride and fear that comes with being a minority, specifically as a non-binary transgendered person: being different is wonderful until it becomes dangerous.
